Tennisfansleague Competitions & NTRP Rating System – Fair, Competitive Tennis for Every Player

Play, Compete, and Improve with Tennisfansleague

At Tennisfansleague, we believe that competition is one of the fastest ways to improve your tennis. Whether you are a beginner playing your first match or an experienced competitor looking for strong opponents, our structured competition program provides exciting opportunities to test your skills, meet new players, and measure your progress.

Based in District 2, Ho Chi Minh City, Tennisfansleague organizes regular social matches, leagues, ladders, round robins, club championships, and special tournaments throughout the year. Every event is designed to create competitive, enjoyable, and fair matches for players of all abilities.

Why Player Ratings Matter

One of the biggest challenges in recreational tennis is finding opponents of a similar level. When players are evenly matched, matches become more enjoyable, more competitive, and more rewarding.

To achieve this, Tennisfansleague uses the National Tennis Rating Program (NTRP) as the primary guide for grouping players by ability.

Originally developed by the United States Tennis Association (USTA), the NTRP (National Tennis Rating Program) is one of the world's most widely recognized recreational tennis rating systems. It classifies players according to their current playing ability rather than age or tournament ranking, helping create balanced and enjoyable competition.

Understanding the NTRP Rating System

The NTRP scale ranges from 1.0 to 7.0, with each level describing a player's technical, tactical, and competitive abilities. Most recreational players fall between 2.5 and 5.0.

NTRP 2.0–2.5 | Beginner

Players are learning the fundamentals of tennis.

Typical characteristics:

  • Learning basic strokes

  • Developing consistency

  • Beginning to serve and rally

  • Understanding scoring and court positioning

NTRP 3.0 | Improver

Players can sustain short rallies and understand basic tactics.

Typical characteristics:

  • Reliable forehand

  • Developing backhand

  • Basic serving consistency

  • Beginning to play competitive matches

NTRP 3.5 | Intermediate

Players become consistent from the baseline and begin constructing points.

Typical characteristics:

  • Better directional control

  • Improved volleys

  • More reliable serves

  • Greater tactical awareness

  • Comfortable in league and club competition

NTRP 4.0 | Advanced Club Player

Players demonstrate good technical consistency and can adapt tactics during matches.

Typical characteristics:

  • Strong groundstrokes

  • Confident net play

  • Offensive and defensive strategies

  • Variety including slice, topspin and spin serves

NTRP 4.5–5.0 | Advanced Competitive Player

Players compete regularly in high-level tournaments and possess excellent technical and physical abilities.

Typical characteristics:

  • Consistent under pressure

  • Powerful serves

  • Advanced shot selection

  • Strong tactical decision-making

  • Excellent movement and fitness

Higher ratings (5.5–7.0) are reserved for elite national, international, and professional-level players.

How Tennisfansleague Uses NTRP Ratings

Our goal is not simply to assign a number—it is to create the best possible tennis experience for every player.

New members receive an initial rating through one or more of the following:

  • Coach assessment

  • Trial session

  • Practice matches

  • Previous competition experience

  • Self online assessment

As players participate in Tennisfansleague competitions, coaches continuously monitor results and overall performance. Ratings may be adjusted over time to ensure players continue competing against opponents of similar ability.

This creates balanced matches where every point matters and every player has the opportunity to improve.
